<image:caption>But titles aside, the topic of veteran mental health awareness and suicide prevention is personal for me. Why? Because I’m a veteran, and I’ve struggled with my own mental health. I know what it’s like to carry invisible weight. I know what it feels like to smile in public while fighting battles internally. I know what it’s like to wonder if anyone really understands.</image:caption>

<image:title>Mental Health Blog - Menopause, Mental Health & the Parts No One Warned Me About</image:title>
<image:caption>For me, menopause didn’t arrive with a dramatic announcement. It crept in slowly. I don't have hot flashes nor night sweats. If I do, it's triggered by caffeine or alcohol, so I know my triggers. At first, I brushed things off as stress, being busy, or just having “a lot on my plate.” But over time, it became harder to ignore.</image:caption>

<image:title>Mental Health Blog - Menopause, Mental Health & the Parts No One Warned Me About</image:title>
<image:caption>Advocating for Myself Was the Turning Point After months of questioning myself, I made the decision to seek medical support. That wasn’t easy. I "interviewed" 4 doctors! Trying to find a doctor who truly listens—not just put me on medication. I had to speak up, ask questions, and make sure that they listened to ME and not put me in a general group.</image:caption>

<image:title>Mental Health Blog - Menopause, Mental Health & the Parts No One Warned Me About</image:title>
<image:caption>I’m sharing my experience because if you’re reading this and quietly wondering if you’re “losing it,” you’re not alone—and you’re not broken. Menopause can feel isolating, especially when the symptoms don’t match the conversations we’ve been taught to expect. But the more we talk openly about menopause and mental health, the more we give ourselves—and other women—permission to seek support without shame.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Before becoming a Licensed Professional Counselor, I spent ten years as an elementary school teacher in Loudoun County. I loved working in the classroom, but by early 2019, I began noticing a growing need—one I couldn’t fully meet as a teacher alone. Students were struggling with emotional and behavioral challenges that required deeper and more specialized mental health support.</image:caption>

<image:title>Mental Health Blog - Mom, Can We Talk?</image:title>
<image:caption>"That sounds really scary. Has she ever talked about killing herself before?" I knew this friend had previously engaged in self-harm, but we had learned in class that self-harm is not equivalent to suicide risk. My daughter nodded. "A few months ago. She took a bunch of melatonin but she was ok. I think she knew that wasn't going to work." That definitely concerned me, so I moved onto the next question. "Has she talked about how she would try this time? Does she have what she might need to do it?" My daughter shook her head. "She didn't tell me."</image:caption>

<image:caption>Resilience is the ability to adapt, recover, and grow when faced with life’s challenges. As a common saying goes - it means dancing in the rain. It means making the best of a difficult situation and finding small little flickers of hope in the darkness. Resilience is NOT avoiding pain or hardship. It is not pushing through hard times without the support of loved ones. It is also NOT a fixed trait - resilience can be learned and cultivated at any age.</image:caption>

<image:title>Mental Health Blog - Healing Through Hooves</image:title>
<image:caption>The journey wasn’t simple. As a military spouse, I spent several years overseas, balancing incredible opportunities with the challenges of constant moves and uncertainty. Building a career in mental health during that time was difficult, but my passion for supporting others never wavered. When we returned stateside, I worked toward earning full licensure—then, like many, faced another obstacle when COVID-19 disrupted everything. Yet that season of pause became a turning point. I began seeking ways to offer counseling beyond traditional four walls and was drawn to equine-assisted psychotherapy (EAP)—a model that allowed me to combine my lifelong love of horses with my purpose as a counselor.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Healing Hoof is more than a counseling practice—it’s a mission. We combine the strength and empathy of a veteran- and woman-owned business with the compassion and insight gained through years of experience in trauma, crisis intervention, and equine-assisted psychotherapy. By stepping outside the traditional therapy room and into the presence of horses, clients often discover that healing can happen differently—through connection, courage, and compassion.</image:caption>

<image:title>Mental Health Blog - The Forgotten Mourners: Supporting Children Through Grief and Loss</image:title>
<image:caption>Often referred to as the Forgotten Mourners, children can be overlooked or misunderstood when it comes to grief. It isn’t purposeful though; some people assume children are too young to be affected or that they don’t fully understand what death means. But the child’s loss is real; their pain is felt deeply; and their mourning is often in isolation. But grief may not always be visible, like tears at a funeral or a cracking voice during a eulogy. Sometimes, it can hide in a child’s sudden withdrawal. In stomachaches or outbursts. It could show up in perfect report cards because they think if they do everything right, bad things won’t happen again. Or they may begin to take on adult responsibilities because they don’t want to add to the sadness that surrounds them.</image:caption>

<image:title>Mental Health Blog - Tending to the Wounds of the Heart</image:title>
<image:caption>You know, when someone falls and skins a knee, we know what to do. We reach for the bandages. When someone’s feeling faint, we call for medical help. But what do we do when someone’s spirit is wounded… when the hurt is invisible, hope has slipped through their fingers, and their faith feels fractured? That’s where Spiritual First Aid steps in. The Mental Health Association of Fauquier County began this initiative in 2021 and it was drawn from the Spiritual First Aid Training Course developed in Wheaton, Illinois. In June 2023, we launched a small pilot cohort that grew out of the Faith Community Wellness Council. The vision was simple but profound: to bring together faith leaders, caregivers, and community members to equip them to recognize spiritual and emotional distress and to respond with both compassion and skill.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Our program has been funded by the Northern Piedmont Community Foundation and UVA Health and we’re so grateful for their trust and investment in the wellbeing of this community. Their support shows that faith and healthcare don’t have to live in separate worlds. They can meet right in the middle, where real people live and hurt and heal.</image:caption>

<image:caption>As a single father with a 4-year-old son, and a 10-year-old daughter, life is different. <image:title>Mental Health Blog - Real Strength Through Vulnerability</image:title>
<image:caption>For fathers like me, the lesson is clear: real strength is shown through vulnerability, in the courage to ask for support, to lean on resources, and to recognize we can’t carry everything alone. That’s part of why I started J.B. Mentoring Solutions LLC, not only to guide youth, but to create a space where families can be open, vulnerable, and supported. When we ask for help, we set an example that builds resilience in our children, strengthens families, and unites communities.</image:caption>

<image:title>Mental Health Blog - You are Not Broken, Just Becoming</image:title>
<image:caption>Hi, I’m Ali Caudill (she/her), the practitioner behind Everroot Integrative Care and founder of Alyn Wellness Studio. I believe healing happens in relationship—with ourselves, with others, and with the deeper layers of our story. I hold space for clients to reconnect with what’s true, what’s tender, and what’s possible. My work is rooted in curiosity, compassion, and the belief that you are not broken—just becoming. I specialize in supporting sensitive, thoughtful humans navigating anxiety, life transitions, identity shifts, and the impact of relational wounds. Many of my clients describe feeling like they’re carrying a lot—responsibility, emotion, pressure—and are longing for more space to breathe, process, and come back to themselves.</image:caption>

<image:caption>When my youngest of three, Maddox, started kindergarten, I returned to school to earn my Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from George Mason. During that time, I began to imagine a mind-body space for healing—and that vision eventually became what Alyn Wellness Studio is today. I’m now a Resident in Counseling, practicing under supervision at my private practice, Everroot Holistic Psychotherapy, which lives within Alyn. My work is trauma-informed and grounded in parts work, mindfulness-based CBT, and somatic awareness.</image:caption>

<image:title>Mental Health Blog - You are Not Broken, Just Becoming</image:title>
<image:caption>One of my ongoing challenges is balancing the many roles I hold—therapist, business owner, parent—and making sure that my own wellness and self-care remain a priority. It can be easy to get swept up in the pace of managing a practice and a space like Alyn, so I’m continually working to create time and energy for rest, reflection, and the slower rhythms that sustain me.</image:caption>

<image:caption>I passionately believe we need to end the stigma around mental health struggles in order to create a society that is more compassionate and more resilient. It can be hard to admit that we’re struggling, especially in a culture that prioritizes “grit” and rugged independence. But the more we share our stories, the more we can connect with one another and rise above our challenges.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Over the years, autoimmune issues have also become part of my story. Learning to manage a chronic condition like Hashimoto’s has added another layer to my journey—requiring me to tune in even more closely to the connection between mind and body. The physical toll of autoimmune disease can be unpredictable and exhausting, but the emotional and mental impact is just as real. I’ve had to learn, sometimes the hard way, how to honor my limits, listen to my body, and build a lifestyle that supports both resilience and rest.</image:caption>

<image:title>Mental Health Blog - Learn to Accept You, as Imperfectly Perfect as You are</image:title>
<image:caption>On the outside I had it all together. But on the inside I was an anxious mess. In high school I would break out in hives; my trapezius muscles would seize up so that I couldn't move my neck from side to side, and I would develop laryngitis. The worst was when I experienced "globus hystericus." Globus hystericus is defined as "a sensation of a lump or foreign body in the throat, often described as a feeling of tightness, pressure, or something stuck." It felt as if my throat was closing up and I couldn't talk or sing and it always seemed to come at the worst points in time. This began in high school and followed me throughout my college life as well. I came down with a horrible case of mono my freshman year in college and had a bad relapse my junior year. I was never the same after this and was diagnosed with "chronic fatigue," as they couldn't find anything wrong with me. Ever since then, I "crash and burn," as my mother calls it. I go, go, go, until I can't anymore and then I get sick.</image:caption>

We were on our back porch and my son dropped a bottle of bubbles and the soap went everywhere. Not a big deal, right? For some reason, it was...at least to me.</image:caption>

<image:title>Mental Health Blog - Learn to Accept You, as Imperfectly Perfect as You are</image:title>
<image:caption>That was 8 years ago. Sometimes it takes something greater than yourself to make you realize that you don't need to struggle by yourself and that you aren't alone. I have so many friends that struggle. Some that do so quietly and some that are more vocal. We have hard conversations and support each other. We aren't critical and do not cast judgement. We are there for each other in whatever capacity we can be. We understand.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Some adverse childhood experiences are unavoidable, like the death of a parent or a divorce or separation of parents. But the good news is that positive childhood experiences can help stabilize a child, build resilience, and improve mental health outcomes as adults. This positive foundation can serve children well into adulthood.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The saying “everybody has a story” could not be more true when it comes to the community we serve. Each person, each family, and each business has a unique experience with mental health, and it's wonderful to see so many come together to support one another. This May, we are witnessing an outpouring of love, kindness, and solidarity from local businesses, organizations, and individuals. From butterfly-themed displays to special events and promotions, our community has shown up in a big way.</image:caption>

<image:caption>For example, imagine having a wardrobe full of clothes but no dresser, hangers, or closet to store them. Those clothes will inevitably end up in piles, creating a sense of disorder. This isn’t a reflection of personal failure; it’s simply a lack of tools and structure. My goal is to help clients establish “homes” for their belongings and create systems that feel intuitive and sustainable.</image:caption>

<image:title>Mental Health Blog - The Harmonic Egg-perience</image:title>
<image:caption>The room is dimly lit with salt lamps and the sounds of a fountain. Every detail in the room is intentional to help you feel at ease. Kim leads you to the massage chair first to begin getting yourself into relaxation mode. Ten minutes with comforting heat, a soft blanket, and the chair hugging your shoulders and calves really sets you into the mode you need to enjoy the egg.</image:caption>

<image:title>Mental Health Blog - The Harmonic Egg-perience</image:title>
<image:caption>The music you hear is customized for each client’s unique situation. As you lay in the egg, the music surrounds you from all sides and then moves around you. I found it to be easy to become mindful to take it all in. The sensory experience is quite sensational. I relaxed so much I think I fell asleep for a short time. When my session was over, Kim quietly opened the doors and then asked me how I felt. I have to be honest, I haven’t felt that relaxed in a very long time. Even in the days after, I recognized a calm presence about myself that I really enjoyed. I can’t wait to experience it again.</image:caption>
